Elon Musk’s social media platform X has limited image editing features on its Grok AI tool to paid subscribers following backlash over sexually explicit deepfakes. The move comes after users exploited Grok to digitally alter photos by removing clothing from people without consent.
Critics said the tool enabled harassment and abuse, including the creation of illegal images involving minors. Non-paying users can still access image editing through Grok’s separate app and website.
Free speech advocates clashed with safety groups, who argued the restriction does not address the core problem.

The Internet Watch Foundation said criminal images appeared to have been generated using Grok and called the response inadequate.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labeled the content “disgraceful” and backed strong regulatory action.
Government officials urged media regulator Ofcom to use its full authority under the Online Safety Act, including possible restrictions on X’s operations in the UK.
