European leaders issued a joint statement Tuesday rejecting renewed calls by President Donald Trump for a U.S. takeover of Greenland, stressing that the territory’s future rests solely with its people and Denmark.
The statement, backed by France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, said Greenland belongs to its residents and that decisions concerning the island must be made only by Denmark and Greenland.

The leaders said Arctic security is vital to European and transatlantic stability and must be addressed collectively through NATO, while respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity under the United Nations Charter.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier warned that a U.S. takeover of Greenland would effectively end NATO.
