Tensions flared at the United Nations Security Council on Monday after Estonia accused Russia of violating its airspace with three MiG-31 fighter jets.
The jets, armed with missiles, reportedly crossed into Estonian territory over the Gulf of Finland for 12 minutes before being intercepted by NATO aircraft, according to radar evidence presented by Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
European allies issued stark warnings. Britain’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said NATO would confront any unauthorized Russian planes in its skies. U.S. Ambassador Michael Waltz, in his first appearance at the UN, pledged America would defend “every inch of NATO territory.”
