The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” technology after multiple reports of vehicles breaking traffic laws, including driving on the wrong side of the road and running red lights.

The probe could impact as many as 2.9 million Tesla vehicles, according to the agency’s filing.

The NHTSA said it had received 58 reports of potential violations. Six crashes were linked to the system’s malfunction at intersections, including four resulting in injuries.

The agency noted that in some cases, drivers had “little notice or opportunity to intervene.” Tesla has reportedly implemented software fixes for one Maryland intersection where repeated incidents occurred.

The investigation adds to Tesla’s mounting regulatory troubles, including a separate probe into door lock malfunctions on Model Y vehicles. The company and CEO Elon Musk are yet to comment.
