Nepal Floods: Rescue Teams Battle Mud To Reach Missing Hydropower Workers

Authorities say more than 11,000 people have been rescued across Nepal.

Rescue teams are racing to locate hundreds of workers feared trapped inside hydropower tunnels after catastrophic flash floods struck Nepal last week, according to CNN.

Nepal’s Independent Power Producers’ Association said about 900 workers are missing across 12 hydropower projects along the Trishuli River. Nearly 600 were reportedly working at the Upper Trishuli-1 project in Rasuwa District.

Rescuers face thick mud, flooded tunnels, damaged roads and bridges, and unstable infrastructure.

At the Trishuli 3A plant, specialists from Nepal, India and China are using drones, thermal cameras, drilling equipment and pumps to reach underground areas. CNN reported that rescuers have already drilled through part of the structure, but have received no response from inside.

Survivors have described desperate escapes through rushing water, concrete and debris. Authorities say more than 11,000 people have been rescued across Nepal.

The disaster has also raised questions about the rapid expansion of hydropower and other major infrastructure in the hazard-prone Himalayas.
