New York City Council members have approved legislation banning horse-drawn carriage rides by June 2028, potentially ending a tradition that has lasted more than 150 years.
The decision follows safety concerns, including the June death of 18-year-old Indian tourist Romanch Mahajan, who died after jumping from a runaway carriage. The Central Park Conservancy also reported seven horse-related incidents over the previous 13 months.
However, the legislation faces potential legal challenges. The union representing carriage workers has vowed to contest the measure in court.
Former mayors were unable to implement a similar ban, while President Donald Trump criticized the decision, describing carriage rides as a quintessential New York experience that residents and visitors would miss.
