A drone installation illuminated New York Harbor on Wednesday night, recreating the Twin Towers at full architectural scale to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The commemorative artwork featured 2,977 individual lights, representing the people killed in the attacks.
Created in dialogue with New York’s annual “Tribute in Light,” the installation was designed to connect individual losses with the broader history of the attacks.
Organizers said the display also aims to help younger generations understand an event that an increasing number of Americans have no personal memory of.
The New York Foundation for the Arts sponsored the project. Participants said the tribute was intended to reinforce themes of remembrance and unity while ensuring the memory of those lost continues to be carried forward.
