Nithya Raman is projected to become Los Angeles's next mayor, defeating incumbent Karen Bass with a lead of more than three percentage points, according to Decision Desk, with nearly three-quarters of expected votes counted.

Voter dissatisfaction over housing affordability, the departure of entertainment productions from the city and the response to the Palisades wildfire shaped the contest. Raman ran an insurgent campaign challenging the local Democratic Party establishment.

A Harvard- and MIT-trained urban planner, Raman received significant support from Hollywood. She backed Measure ULA, known as the "Mansion Tax", before raising concerns about its unintended effects on apartment construction.

Her projected victory would establish a progressive leadership group at City Hall alongside City Controller Kenneth Mejia and City Attorney Marissa Roy.

Raman will also face the challenge of overseeing Los Angeles as it prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
