A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer is fighting for his life after being shot in the face Saturday night in Manhattan’s Fort Washington Park — an attack that has reignited national debate over illegal immigration and New York City’s sanctuary policies.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem directly blamed Mayor Eric Adams and city leadership. “This officer is in the hospital today because those in charge refused to keep the public safe,” she said at a press conference Monday.
Dominican national Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, 21, allegedly ambushed the off-duty officer and has a history of multiple arrests without bail under NYC’s policies. Nunez reportedly entered the U.S. illegally in 2023.

President Donald Trump also weighed in via Truth Social, blaming rising crime on “cashless bail” and calling the situation a “complete disaster.” Adams, now running for re-election as an independent, has not yet commented on the case
