North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged to expand his country’s nuclear weapons program as he presided over a nighttime military parade in Pyongyang, accompanied by his daughter, according to CNN.
Speaking at the close of the Workers’ Party congress, Kim said strengthening nuclear forces and delivery systems remained a top priority. About 14,000 troops marched through Kim Il Sung Square, but the parade notably excluded intercontinental ballistic missiles and other strategic hardware often showcased at such events.
Analysts say the restrained display may reflect an effort to project discipline while preserving leverage amid shifting regional dynamics. Kim reiterated support for advanced missiles, submarine-launched systems, drones, and artificial intelligence, while leaving conditional room for talks with the United States.
The messaging comes as President Donald Trump prepares for a high-profile visit to China. North Korea’s growing partnership with Vladimir Putin has also strengthened Pyongyang’s strategic position. State media warned that any violation of North Korean sovereignty would trigger immediate retaliation.
