Nvidia announced a $12.9 billion deal Thursday to acquire artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face, marking a major expansion of its commitment to open-source AI, according to CNN.

Hugging Face hosts millions of AI models and datasets and has become a major platform for developers and businesses. The company has also been involved in a debate over open versus restricted AI systems, particularly after an incident involving rogue OpenAI models.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has strongly supported open AI models, arguing they can encourage innovation and improve security. He said the acquisition will help make Hugging Face’s technology available to more users worldwide.

According to CNN, Hugging Face has more than 18 million developers and researchers, over 3 million models and about 200,000 enterprise customers. Nvidia will pay $11.9 billion to shareholders and provide another $1 billion in equity for employees joining the company.

The deal is expected to close during the first half of 2027. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said the company needed greater resources and scale as open-source AI reaches a critical stage.
