New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said Thursday he is not worried that his upcoming Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump is a political trap. Instead, he plans to focus on one issue: New York’s affordability crisis.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who won a surprise victory this month, said he intends to push Trump for federal cooperation despite their political hostility.

Trump has spent months attacking Mamdani, falsely calling him a communist and threatening to withhold federal funds or even deport him, despite Mamdani being a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Trump announced the meeting Wednesday in a post mocking Mamdani’s middle name and labeling him the “Communist Mayor of New York City.”
Mamdani dismissed the rhetoric and said he will attend as a representative of the city, not as a partisan foe. He emphasized that affordability and protecting New Yorkers — including from aggressive immigration enforcement — will guide his message.
