The US economy added 165,000 jobs in October, exceeding economists’ expectations, while the unemployment rate declined to 4.1% from 4.2%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data reported by CNN.
However, annual wage growth slowed to 3.1% from a revised 3.2%. The report noted that household purchasing power remains under pressure as inflation continues to outpace recent pay gains, partly due to higher energy costs linked to the Iran war.
The stronger hiring figures offer some reassurance amid economic uncertainty following the midterm elections. Meanwhile, US stock futures were mixed after the report, with Nasdaq futures recovering from Thursday’s technology stock sell-off.
