Employees are increasingly using ChatGPT to complete tasks traditionally handled by specialists, signaling that artificial intelligence is reshaping workplace responsibilities, according to new OpenAI research reported by Axios.
The study analyzed more than 800,000 work-related prompts from U.S. business users and found that 44% of occupation-specific requests involved work typically associated with another profession.
According to OpenAI Chief Economist Ronnie Chatterji, AI is making job boundaries more flexible as workers rely on the technology to handle a broader range of responsibilities. Customer service staff, designers and human resources professionals recorded the highest levels of cross-functional AI use.
The report said smaller businesses showed slightly higher rates of crossover tasks than larger firms, suggesting employees are using AI to compensate for limited access to specialists. Researchers cautioned that the findings do not yet prove higher productivity or changes in hiring decisions.
