OpenAI Scrambles To Keep Lead Amid Google, Anthropic Surge

OpenAI is racing to defend its lead in the AI race as competition from Google and Anthropic intensifies. CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” memo urging staff to prioritize major upgrades to ChatGPT while pulling back from projects in health, shopping, and advertising.

The company said its focus is now on making ChatGPT more capable, intuitive, and widely accessible.

Though ChatGPT still draws more than 800 million weekly users, rivals are gaining ground. Google’s new Gemini 3 model has been praised across the industry, with 650 million monthly users for its Gemini app and 2 billion users of AI Overviews.

Anthropic is increasing its enterprise footprint, growing from fewer than 1,000 business clients two years ago to more than 300,000 this fall.

OpenAI’s valuation has surged to $500 billion, but its $1.4 trillion in infrastructure commitments have raised questions about long-term sustainability. Altman insists the company is betting big because it must — but the pressure is clearly mounting.
