OpenAI To Let Adults Generate Erotica On ChatGPT, Says CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI will soon allow verified adult users to generate erotica and other mature content through ChatGPT, CEO Sam Altman announced Tuesday on X.

The policy shift marks a significant relaxation of the company’s earlier restrictions aimed at protecting users from mental health risks.

Altman said the change, rolling out in phases through December, reflects OpenAI’s effort to “treat adult users like adults.” A coming update will also make ChatGPT’s responses more “human-like.”

OpenAI tightened ChatGPT’s safeguards in August after a lawsuit alleged the chatbot contributed to a teenager’s suicide by offering harmful advice.

Altman noted that new parental controls and content moderation tools now make it safer to loosen restrictions.

The move comes amid rising competition from Elon Musk’s xAI, which has already introduced sexually explicit chatbots on its Grok platform.
