Over 400 Celebrities Back Kimmel Amid FCC Pressure On ABC

More than 400 actors, musicians, and entertainers have signed an open letter organized by the ACLU defending Jimmy Kimmel after his late-night show was suspended by ABC. Signatories include Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, and Natalie Portman, among others.

The letter denounces “government threats to our freedom of speech,” referencing FCC Chair Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, who pressured Disney/ABC after Kimmel made remarks about a conservative activist’s alleged killer. Several ABC affiliates soon dropped the program, leading to its indefinite suspension.

Celebrities argue this is a bipartisan issue, warning that silencing artists and journalists undermines America’s constitutional principles. They insist free expression should not be curtailed by political retaliation.

Kimmel’s representatives are reportedly in discussions with Disney executives about the show’s future, but no resolution has been announced.
