The Pentagon has added OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok for Government to its enterprise generative AI platform, expanding the artificial intelligence tools available to Defense Department personnel.

The models will be offered through GenAI.mil, a platform launched last year to give Defense Department employees access to commercial AI systems. The platform initially offered Google's Gemini for Government and now has more than 1.7 million users.

Grok for Government will provide capabilities including advanced reasoning, customizable workspaces, persistent projects and reusable tools designed to preserve institutional knowledge. The Pentagon said the system could support tasks ranging from acquisition research to supply-chain management.

ChatGPT Mil will focus on document-heavy, unclassified work such as planning, policy, logistics and administration. The Defense Department says it is designed to support more than 3 million personnel.

The expansion comes amid the Pentagon's broader effort to incorporate commercial AI into military operations. OpenAI and xAI have also secured agreements to provide models for classified environments.
