Pentagon Shifts Greenland To U.S. Northern Command

The Pentagon announced that it is shifting responsibility for Greenland from U.S. European Command to U.S. Northern Command.

The Pentagon said the move would “strengthen the Joint Force’s ability to defend the U.S. homeland” and reflects a broader update to the Unified Command Plan, which defines military responsibilities across global regions.

Former Pentagon official Iris Ferguson called the move a sign that Greenland is being treated as a “cornerstone” of U.S. Arctic security but warned against sidelining Denmark.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declined to rule out using force to take Greenland during recent testimony before Congress, further stoking controversy.

President Donald Trump has long voiced ambitions over Greenland, declaring in March, “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”

European allies are uneasy, though no annexation has been formally proposed.
