During a Cabinet meeting hosted by President Donald Trump at the White House, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth revealed that the U.S. had signed "historic deals" with Panama aimed at reasserting American influence over the Panama Canal.
“We just got back from Panama last night. We were at the Panama Canal… and signed a couple of historic deals. We’re taking back the canal. China’s had too much influence. Obama and others let them creep in. We, along with Panama, are pushing them out.” - Pete Hegseth
While details of the agreements have not yet been released, the statement suggests a significant geopolitical shift, aiming to counter China’s growing presence in Central America.
It’s been a productive visit in Panama. It was great to meet so many of our regional partners and hear how we are working together, training together, and exercising together.
