Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has secured the Democratic nomination for governor after defeating U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in a closely watched primary election.
The victory marks a significant political upset, as Bennet entered the race with statewide name recognition and years of experience in the U.S. Senate.
Early election returns showed Weiser leading Bennet by approximately 55% to 45%.
The primary became a broader contest over the direction of the Democratic Party, with voters weighing establishment leadership against a more confrontational approach toward the Trump administration.
With the nomination secured, Weiser will now turn his attention to the general election, where he will seek to keep Colorado's governorship under Democratic control in one of the state's most closely watched political contests.
