Physiology Or Medicine Winners 2024

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA, a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated.

The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million) from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.

Sweden is not part of the eurozone, and its currency has recently plummeted to its lowest level ever against the euro and the U.S. dollar.

This year’s Nobel Prize laureates will receive their awards at prize ceremonies on December 10, the anniversary of award founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.

Since 1901, just two Nobel Prize laureates have declined the prize. Jean-Paul Sartre, who was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, declined the award because he had consistently declined all official honours.

Le Duc Tho was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, in 1973. Le Duc declined the award for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord, citing the situation in Vietnam as his reason.

Authorities have forced four Nobel Prize laureates to decline the Nobel Prize.

Adolf Hitler forbade three German Nobel Prize laureates, Richard Kuhn, Adolf Butenandt, and Gerhard Domagk, from accepting the prize. They could receive the Nobel Prize diploma and medal later, but not the prize amount.

Boris Pasternak, the 1958 Nobel Laureate in Literature, initially accepted the award but was later coerced by the authorities of his native country, the Soviet Union, to decline it.
