Two thieves posing as visitors smashed a museum display case in Vienna and escaped with a diamond necklace valued at more than $4 million, according to Austrian police.
The men reportedly used a hammer to break the case at the Museum of Applied Arts, then fled on foot toward a nearby park. Police released CCTV images and launched a manhunt, including searches with dogs. No injuries were reported, although authorities believe one suspect may have been armed.
The museum has since strengthened security, with metal detectors reportedly installed. Interpol has added the necklace to its stolen-art database.
The report said the robbery comes amid a broader rise in aggressive museum thefts across Europe, with Europol warning that criminals increasingly view such crimes as lucrative opportunities.
