Pope Leo XIV is preparing for an 11-day South America tour beginning November 6, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, his adopted homeland, less than three weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumour.
Despite remaining in recovery, the Vatican has scheduled more than 50 engagements, including open-air masses and meetings with Indigenous communities in the Amazon.
The tour will conclude in Peru, where Leo, formerly Robert Francis Prevost, is expected to meet President Keiko Fujimori and address political instability and the needs of approximately 1.6 million Venezuelan migrants.
Georgetown University scholar Christopher White described the journey as the most closely watched trip of Leo's papacy so far. His planned visit to Cusco, at an altitude of 3,400 metres, will also test his recovery.
