Preservation Group Moves To Block Trump’s White House Expansion Plan

White House ballroom

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has sued the Trump administration to halt construction of President Donald Trump’s proposed White House ballroom, arguing the project is moving forward without legally required review.

The nonprofit says the administration ignored its request to pause demolition of the East Wing until federal oversight bodies and the public review the plan, CNN reported.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, names Trump, the National Park Service, the Interior Department, and the General Services Administration. The trust argues that no president may demolish portions of the White House without undergoing established preservation and planning procedures.

The Trump administration insists the president has full authority to modernize and expand the residence. Officials say the ballroom plan will eventually go before appropriate federal commissions, though demolition has already begun.

The White House argues the expansion is necessary to accommodate larger state events, while preservationists warn it threatens a core national landmark.
