India imports about half of its crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz, making the disruption a serious concern for the world’s third largest oil importer. Officials said petrol pumps still have adequate stocks, but panic buying of liquefied petroleum gas has created shortages for restaurants and businesses.
Analysts warn that higher oil prices could push up inflation and weaken the rupee. According to the report, India has also increased purchases of Russian crude as it looks for alternative energy supplies while the shipping route remains blocked.
