Private sector hiring rebounded in July, with employers adding 104,000 jobs, according to data released Wednesday by payroll processor ADP. The figure surpassed economists’ expectations of 64,000 and reversed a revised June loss of 23,000 jobs.
Though slower than last year’s pace, the July number signals continued resilience in the U.S. labor market.
Private employers added 104,000 jobs in July, led by a resurgence in services. One exception was education and health, which has posted a net loss of jobs so far this year. The ADP National Employment Report is available at https://t.co/VaxClcBBwR. #economy #labormarket pic.twitter.com/UpS8C2atei

ADP’s chief economist Nela Richardson said the data shows a "healthy economy," driven by employers’ optimism about consumer strength.
Leisure and hospitality led all sectors with 46,000 hires, followed by financial activities (28,000), trade and transportation (18,000), and construction (15,000). Small businesses lagged, adding just 12,000 jobs.
Education and health services posted a loss of 38,000 positions. Wages grew at a 4.4% annual rate.
The report comes ahead of Friday’s key employment figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
