Project Prometheus: Bezos Steps Back Into Leadership Role With Massive AI Bet

Jeff Bezos is set to return to an active leadership role for the first time since leaving Amazon in 2021. The New York Times reported that he will serve as co-chief executive of Project Prometheus, a new artificial intelligence startup focused on engineering and manufacturing applications, including computers, automobiles and spacecraft.

The company has reportedly raised $6.2 billion, partly from Bezos himself, making it one of the most heavily funded early-stage AI ventures.

Bezos will lead the firm alongside Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist who previously worked with Google co-founder Sergey Brin at Google X.

Project Prometheus has already hired nearly 100 employees, including talent from OpenAI, DeepMind and Meta.

The move places Bezos directly into an increasingly competitive AI race dominated by major players like OpenAI, Google and Meta.

Reuters said it could not independently confirm the Times’ reporting and noted that Bezos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
