Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia died Wednesday morning at age 75, his family confirmed. Connolly passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. A longtime public servant, he represented Virginia’s 11th District since 2009 and previously served 14 years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

In April, Connolly announced he would not seek reelection after revealing his oesophagal cancer had returned. Despite his diagnosis, he continued pushing back against cuts to federal workers in his district under the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Doge task force.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised Connolly’s unwavering advocacy, calling him a tireless defender of civil servants. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also paid tribute, highlighting Connolly’s decades of dedication. His family described him as a champion for the voiceless who lived to serve his community. No announcement has been made on how his House seat will be filled.
