A new global report has downgraded the United States’ democratic standing, citing growing concerns over press freedom and concentration of power, reported by CNN, citing the Varieties of Democracies (V-Dem) Institute.

The 2026 Democracy Report classifies the US as an “electoral democracy” rather than a “liberal democracy,” pointing to what researchers describe as increased pressure on media and dissenting voices, according to the report. It says freedom of expression has fallen to its lowest level since World War II.

Researchers attribute the shift to actions taken during President Donald Trump’s second term, including expanded executive authority, reduced legislative checks, and policies affecting civil liberties, the report said.

The study also flags rising media self-censorship in the US and other countries. Globally, 44 nations are now trending toward autocracy, compared to just 12 moving toward democracy.

The report adds that courts, particularly the Supreme Court, could play a decisive role in shaping future outcomes.
