Republicans' sweeping midterm losses have intensified early competition for the party's 2028 presidential nomination, creating fresh challenges for Vice President JD Vance, according to CNN.
Vance blamed the Iran war and economic concerns for the setbacks, while outlining priorities that include ending the conflict and addressing domestic issues.
However, former Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has begun positioning himself for a possible comeback after criticising the Trump administration's handling of immigration, corruption and technology policy.
Vance remains the frontrunner, with support from major Republican donors and conservative organisations. However, President Donald Trump has not formally endorsed him and has mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio as another possible successor.
The election results could encourage a crowded Republican primary, with several figures reassessing their political ambitions.
