Target announced Wednesday that it is partnering with OpenAI to let shoppers browse and purchase products directly through ChatGPT, giving the retailer access to the chatbot’s 800 million weekly active users.
The feature launches next week, just in time for the holiday season, as Target works to win back inflation-weary customers.
Inside the ChatGPT app, users can tag Target and ask for recommendations for events or plans.

ChatGPT will then suggest items such as décor, snacks, or gifts and allow shoppers to check out without leaving the interface. Target said the system will evolve to anticipate customer preferences over time.

The move comes as Target struggles with declining sales. Same-store sales fell 2.7 percent last quarter, while profit dropped 19 percent. The company is also rolling out price cuts and a $1 billion investment plan.
Retailers like Walmart have adopted similar AI tools as younger consumers increasingly trust AI to guide their shopping choices, according to a Harris Poll.
