Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday for his first official trip to Asia since President Donald Trump returned to office. His visit comes amid growing tensions over Trump's plans to impose tariffs on seven Southeast Asian nations.
Speaking at a gathering of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Rubio attempted to reassure the region of Washington’s continued commitment.

“It is our strong view that the story of the next 50 years will be written here,” Rubio said, according to Reuters. “Distraction is impossible.”
Rubio’s remarks follow a wave of tariff letters sent by Trump to U.S. trading partners, warning that new levies will take effect on August 1. While Rubio emphasized diplomatic engagement, his trip is overshadowed by Trump’s hardline trade agenda, raising questions about America’s strategic balancing act in the Indo-Pacific.
Rubio will continue meetings with ASEAN leaders throughout the week.
