Russian President Vladimir Putin praised ties with China as reaching an “unprecedentedly high level” during talks in Beijing with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh.
At the summit, Gazprom announced a binding deal to construct the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline, which will deliver 50 billion cubic meters of gas annually from western Russia to northern China for the next 30 years. The project is designed to offset much of Moscow’s lost European energy revenue since the Ukraine war began.

Putin and Xi emphasized their nations’ “strategic alignment,” invoking past Soviet-era ties. Xi called Putin an “old friend,” pledging cooperation on development, security, and global governance.
The visit, Putin’s longest to a single country since 2022, underscores Moscow’s pivot to Beijing as it faces Western sanctions and U.S. pressure. Putin also briefed Xi on his recent negotiations in Alaska with President Donald Trump.
