Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s railway system, targeting a critical civilian and military lifeline as the war grinds on. Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, plays a central role in transporting civilians, troops, supplies, and foreign leaders, with air travel still suspended nationwide.
In recent months, Russian drones have struck rail hubs, power substations, depots, and even passenger trains, according to CNN.
Since 2022, Russia has continued to deliberately attack passenger trains, stations, and critical rail infrastructure across Ukraine – locations crowded with civilians.

At least five people were killed in January when a drone hit a train in the Kharkiv region. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, saying there was no military justification for killing civilians.

Ukrainian officials say attacks on rail infrastructure surged last year, exceeding the previous two years combined.
The goal, they argue, is to cripple logistics and demoralize civilians. Despite the damage, emergency repairs and backup transport have kept trains running.
Ukraine’s government says the rail system remains vital to national resistance, even as Russia expands its campaign against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
