Russia has launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in months, killing seven people and triggering emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three other regions.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said the assault marked the first attack of this scale since the previous heating season. The strikes come as Ukrainian officials warn of difficult winter conditions and shortages of air-defense systems.
The attacks follow warnings from Moscow that it would target Ukraine’s energy system in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian fuel and energy facilities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also warned that Ukraine could retaliate against Russian infrastructure if no energy truce was reached.
President Donald Trump previously said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking energy facilities, although both sides clarified that no formal agreement had been completed.
Meanwhile, NATO said it remains prepared to defend member states amid rising tensions with Moscow.
