A senior Russian military officer was killed Monday in a car bomb attack in Moscow, marking the latest assassination of a high-ranking official since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Russian authorities.

Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov died after an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle detonated in a residential neighborhood, Russia’s investigative committee said.

Officials said one leading theory is that Ukrainian special services organized the attack, though multiple motives are being examined. The Kremlin confirmed President Vladimir Putin was briefed immediately.

Sarvarov led the Russian armed forces’ operational training department for nine years and previously oversaw missions in Syria during Moscow’s support for the Assad regime, according to state media.

The killing follows a series of deadly attacks on Russian military and political figures since 2022. Several have involved car bombs or improvised explosives in Moscow and other cities. Some past attacks were openly claimed by Ukrainian officials.
