Ukraine launched a major attack on Russian naval vessels and grain export facilities in Novorossiysk, raising concerns about further disruptions to global food markets.
Russian authorities said three people, including an eight-year-old child, were killed and 24 injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the operation successful, saying drones and long-range weapons struck several Russian warships and other military facilities.
Russia is the world’s largest wheat exporter, while Ukraine is also a major supplier to Asian and African markets. Russian officials accused Kyiv of threatening global food security. According to agricultural consultancy SovEcon, Russia’s August wheat exports could fall well below the five-year average.
The strikes come as Russia and Ukraine increasingly target each other’s agricultural and export infrastructure across the Black Sea, contributing to higher global wheat prices.
