Senate Votes On Iran War Powers As Trump Expands Military Campaign

The U.S. Senate is preparing to vote on a war powers resolution addressing President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran. The measure would require congressional approval before further strikes.

The vote comes as the conflict, now several days old, expands across the Middle East with no clear long term strategy, according to the Associated Press.

The resolution faces steep odds in the Republican controlled Congress and would likely face a presidential veto even if it passed. Still, the vote forces lawmakers to publicly state their positions on the war.

Trump launched the military operation without prior congressional approval and administration officials are now working to reassure lawmakers about the mission.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters the administration does not plan to place American troops in harm’s way. However, six U.S. service members were killed in a recent drone strike in Kuwait. Trump has not ruled out deploying ground forces, though officials say the current campaign could end within weeks.
