Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts have charged six people in connection with an alleged sham marriage operation that generated more than $6 million over more than a decade.
US Attorney Leah Foley said Wednesday that Jennifer Gonzalez allegedly organized the scheme, charging between $38,000 and $40,000 per marriage and facilitating 18 to 20 arrangements annually. Prosecutors allege foreign nationals married US citizens to obtain immigration benefits unlawfully.
Foley described the operation as sophisticated and said investigators were alerted after an individual came forward with information. Federal authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as they pursue potential co-conspirators.
The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
