A group of Democratic senators has accused the Social Security Administration of sending retirees a misleading and politically charged email that overstated the benefits of President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, according to CBS News.
The July 2 message from Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano praised improvements at the agency and claimed more than 35 million seniors received an average of $7,500 in tax relief.
They said the email undermined the agency's commitment to political neutrality and requested a response from Bisignano by Aug. 11.
According to CBS News, advocacy groups also disputed the tax relief claim, arguing that deductions reduce taxable income rather than provide direct refunds. Analysts cited in the report estimated the average tax savings for many seniors would be substantially lower than the amount highlighted in the email.
