Spain Closes Airspace To U.S. Planes Over Iran War

Spain has barred U.S. military aircraft involved in the Iran war from using its airspace, reinforcing its opposition to the conflict. Defense Minister Margarita Robles said the decision was communicated clearly to American forces from the outset, according to the Associated Press.

Madrid had already denied the U.S. access to joint military bases in Rota and Morón. The report said the airspace restriction follows the same policy, as Spain views the conflict as unlawful and unjust.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been among Europe’s strongest critics of U.S. and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.

Spanish newspaper El Pais first reported the move, citing military sources. Robles reiterated that neither bases nor airspace would be used for operations linked to the Iran war.

The decision risks further tension with Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier warned of trade consequences after Spain blocked access to its bases, the report noted.
