Study Suggests Bats Originated In Europe About 65 Million Years Ago

A major study published in Nature suggests that bats originated in Europe about 65 million years ago, challenging earlier theories that placed their origins in Asia, Africa or North America.

The research, conducted by the Bat1K project, combined genetic and fossil evidence from 103 bat genomes and 44 fossils to produce a revised evolutionary family tree.

The study could also contribute to research into disease resistance and longevity, while improving understanding of bat biodiversity and conservation. Researchers noted that roughly 80% of bat species face conservation threats.

Despite the advances, scientists have not yet identified the common ancestor of all living bats and say further research will be needed to complete the evolutionary picture.
