The Supreme Court of the United States agreed Monday to hear a closely watched case over whether a Colorado city can sue major oil companies for damages tied to climate change.
The appeal stems from a lawsuit filed by Boulder against Exxon Mobil and Suncor Energy, alleging the companies misled the public about climate risks.
Energy firms argue such claims are barred by federal law, including the Clean Air Act, and warn that allowing the case to proceed would let individual cities shape national energy policy.

President Donald Trump’s administration urged the court to step in, saying the lawsuit could expose global energy producers to massive liability and conflicting regulations.
The case could affect similar lawsuits filed by states and cities nationwide. Boulder argues the dispute should proceed under state law and that federal courts should not intervene at this stage.
