Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Australia triggered mass protests and clashes with police in Sydney, highlighting deep divisions over Israel’s war in Gaza.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese invited Herzog as a show of solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community following a deadly Hanukkah attack near Bondi Beach that killed 15 people.
While Jewish organizations welcomed the visit, thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered nationwide, according to CNN.

The largest protest outside Sydney Town Hall ended with police using pepper spray and making arrests after crowds refused to disperse. Activist groups accused authorities of excessive force.
Critics argue Herzog should not have been invited, citing a United Nations inquiry that accused Israeli leaders, including Herzog, of inciting genocide, a claim Israel strongly rejects. Herzog has denied wrongdoing and dismissed the UN findings as illegitimate.
Australian authorities confirmed Herzog is protected by diplomatic immunity. The government said the visit was intended to promote unity but opponents warn it has instead heightened social tensions.
