A new My Formosa poll shows growing reluctance among Taiwanese citizens to risk their lives defending the island amid escalating tensions with mainland China. About 52% said they were unwilling to make such a sacrifice, up 8.4 points from two years ago, while 41% were willing, down four points.
A majority of respondents—58%—favored restarting talks with Beijing to prevent war, while only 3% supported fully complying with President Donald Trump’s requests on defense and trade.
Analysts say the results reflect “war fatigue,” skepticism about U.S. reliability, and a public preference for peace over confrontation.
A separate survey by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation found 57% no longer view the U.S. as a reliable ally, and 45% doubt Trump’s commitment to deterring Beijing.
Despite the unease, Taipei maintains that its defense buildup is aimed at preserving peace, not provoking China.
