Tech Sector Job Losses Soar As Amazon Axes 9,000: Infographics
The seemingly unstoppable tech cull continues as Amazon axes another 9,000 jobs – having already laid off 18,000 staff in January.
Amazon is to make another 9,000 workers redundant on top of the 18,000 staff it laid off two months ago – taking the number of tech sector job losses in the past 12 months to more than 400,000, according to the TrueUp tech lay-off tracker.
The news comes just days after Facebook owner Meta axed a further 10,000 jobs on top of the 11,000 it let go last October.
Tech companies are cutting costs due to having expanded too rapidly during the pandemic when lockdowns fueled a stay-at-home economy of online shopping and a need for new computers and tablets to work from home.
Microsoft, Google, and Twitter have also made sizeable staff reductions in recent months to slim down teams and save money.
