Texas executed Jamaal Howard on Wednesday, making him the 30th person put to death in the US this year and the first execution since Tennessee’s failed attempt involving Christa Pike, according to the Associated Press.

Howard, 46, was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. after receiving pentobarbital at the Huntsville state prison. He had been convicted of killing convenience store clerk Vickie Swartout during a 2000 robbery in Silsbee, Texas. Surveillance footage showed Howard shooting Swartout, who was 42.

Before the execution, Howard apologized to members of Swartout’s family and said he hoped they could eventually forgive him. His sister, who witnessed the execution, became distressed and left the room with assistance from officers.

Howard’s attorneys unsuccessfully sought stays based on claims of intellectual disability and concerns over Texas’ execution drugs. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and US Supreme Court declined to intervene.

Texas has conducted six executions this year and plans two more. Florida leads the nation with 16 executions.
