Authorities have ordered evacuations in rural Texas as the Ross Fire rapidly expanded to more than 78 square miles, forcing schools to close in two counties west of Fort Worth.
The blaze began Monday afternoon and spread quickly under extremely favorable fire conditions.
Investigators suspect human activity caused the Nevada blaze, which began Saturday near the California border.
The fires come amid an unusually active wildfire season across the United States. More than 50,000 wildfires have burned nationwide this year, the highest total in a decade, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Dry conditions have contributed to the spread of numerous new large fires, particularly across southern states, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders and maintain heightened emergency responses.
