Thousands of farmers, students and workers staged demonstrations across more than 50 Italian cities on Friday, protesting rising living costs and deteriorating public services, according to CNN.
The nationwide action, organised by the anti-capitalist trade union USB, included strikes involving teachers and workers from agriculture and healthcare.
Protesters raised concerns about healthcare, education and economic pressures. In Genoa, dockworkers opposed the use of ports for shipping weapons to conflict zones, while students in Bologna demanded changes to education policy.
Italy’s Interior Ministry said preventive arrests had been made ahead of the demonstrations. However, clashes between protesters and police were reported in some locations.
The unrest comes amid wider demonstrations across Europe, where citizens have mobilised over living costs, housing shortages, public services and allegations of government corruption.
